Laser Therapy for Sports Injuries – What’s it all about?

Laser Therapy Point Cook

At Sole Motion Podiatry we are VERY excited about Laser Therapy and the massive changes it’s been making to the recovery and lives of our patients! We’ve seen our patients – from those just beginning their exercise journey to top performing athletes – recover faster and quickly get back to doing the things they love.

So what is Low Level Laser Therapy?

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), otherwise known as photobiomodulation, is exactly as it sounds – it’s a therapy using lasers or LED’s to help heal your injuries and get you back to your active and healthy self! It safely works to improve healing though:

  • Repairing damaged tissues and wounds
  • Reducing your pain
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Reduces muscular fatigue, muscle damage and DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)

Because ongoing inflammation and recurring sports injuries, particularly when not effectively managed, can lead to arthritis, using LLLT can actually reduce the risk of arthritis too.

What can Laser Therapy be used for?

Whether an injury has been building up over time from strain or overuse, or you’ve had a traumatic injury on the field, we’ve found laser therapy to be extremely beneficial in treating sports injuries. The goal of sports rehab is getting you back in the game as quickly as possible, with optimal health and long-term outcomes and the laser does just that.

We love that it’s an effective anti-inflammatory without the side effects of traditional anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) meaning it’s also safer – and there’s no heating effect either as it’s a cold laser.

It’s great for muscular strains, sprains, tears, tendinitis and soft tissue injuries, bones and nerves. LLLT has also been shown to be effective for arthritic joint pain and nerve pain too.

So, does it ACTUALLY work?

LLLT is evidence based with over 400 clinical trials published. It’s shown to be more effective than anti-inflammatory medication, produces an analgesic effect to reduce pain and improves the rate of healing – with some studies showing the reduction of healing time of chronic tendinopathies by 70%. It’s been proven to be particularly effective for jumpers knee and achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis where studies have been conducted on these areas, among general injuries.

Organisations and groups that use the same LLLT as we have in our clinic include the British & US Military, Olympic teams (NIKE Sponsored Athletes & Olympians), Formula 1, football, rugby and cricket teams as well as the many specialist clinics that use it with great results and feedback.

More than that, we’ve seen it personally speed up the recovery of hundreds of patients in our clinic and we’re stoked with the results.
