Laser Podiatry

LLLT or Low Level Laser Therapy is the application of red and near infrared light over injuries to improve soft tissue healing. It is commonly used to treat a range of persistent conditions, which can be difficult to treat. These include
all types of joint and muscle pains, sprains & strains including back & neck pain and arthritis. So if you are suffering a pain, which seems impossible to relieve, we may be able to help. This treatment has no side effects, as the Lasers used are not sufficiently strong to damage cells. LLLT uses light energy to stimulate cells, helping them to function optimally, which in turn encourages the healing process. Once the photons find the injured tissues, they stimulate and energise the cells to repair and strengthen at a remarkably fast rate. Collagen production is stimulated so the ligaments and tissues grow stronger than the normal healing.

Whether your pain has been caused by a sports injury, accident or has developed over time, LLLT is proven to offer effective, long-term relief from aches and pains. LLLT has undergone over 1000 published laboratory studies and is already proven in over 200 successful randomized double blind controlled clinical trials (RCT’s). The intensity of LLLT lasers and LED’s is not high like a surgical laser. There is no heating effect but the effects are through the light stimulation to cells, so LLLT therapy is completely painless. Unlike other electrotherapy modalities, it does not aim to alter a cell or tissues, instead enhances what a cell would do naturally by providing energy to the mitochondria – the powerhouse of cells.

What can be treated? Here are some examples.

  • Lower back pain including chronic pain
  • Nerve pain in the lower limbs – Sciatica
  • Tendinopathies – Patella, Peroneal, Achilles
  • Arthritic pain and joint pain throughout the body
  • Acute Hip, Knee, Ankle and Foot Pain
  • Osteoarthritis, Gout, Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lymphoedema
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Neuralgia (inc. Trigeminal)
  • Muscle sprains and strains Acute & Chronic
  • Mortons Neuroma
  • Post operative pain and swelling

Top 5 Questions

LLLT is non – invasive and does not hurt. Some patients may experience sensations post treatment, which should pass (e.g. fatigue).

Our sessions generally take 20 – 30mins. Research has indicated that prolonged treatment provides no additional benefit to the patient. In other words there is an optimal dose time of approximately 20mins.

The damaged cells absorb the light and convert it to energy. That energy aids in tissue repair, reduction of inflammation and blocks pain nerves.

Whilst LLLT alone may be enough to treat your condition we also use Kinesio Taping methods to ‘unlock’ the area and/or reduce inflammation.

Every medical condition is different and responses to LLLT can differ. Generally 4 – 6 treatments will indicate how likely you are to respond to further treatments.

The 3 Main Benefits in joint and muscle injuries are

  1. Pain relief: temporary inhibition of nerve conditions in nerve fibres.
  2. Tissue Repair: rapid regeneration of skin, muscle, tendons, ligaments, bone and nerves.
  3. Resolution of inflammation leading to permanent pain relief.
